Key words
  • With the financial support of the European Union under the Global Climate Change Alliance plus (GCCA+) program of intra-African, Caribbean and Pacific (intra-ACP) countries, and coordinated by COMESA, the Climate Smart Agriculture pilot program ( CSA) is being implemented in Madagascar by GSDM through the MANITATRA-2 project. This project aims to highlight the experiences and successes of the previous GCCA pilot project (MANITATRA 1), implemented during the period 2014-2016 in the Vakinankaratra and South-East regions. Thus, the scaling up under the MANITATRA 2 project can be interpreted as a reinforcement of these results for an initially three-year project: July 2018 to June 2021 with an extension until December 31, 2021.

  • The main objective of the project is to support the scaling up of climate-smart agriculture to adapt to climate change and mitigate its effects, as well as to improve food security in Madagascar”. More specifically, the project aims to intensify agroecology for the development of agriculture and the conservation of soils and smart forests in the Middle West and the highlands of the Vakinankaratra region, in Madagasca.

Given the context prevailing in the area of intervention, the implementation of the project is justified by the strong expansion of rainfed rice cultivation. Thus, in practice, one of the fundamental objectives of MANITATRA 2 would be to support the expansion of rainfed rice cultivation in the area. The results of the research carried out on rice by the SPAD, which made it possible to develop high-performance varieties but faced with problems of fertility and weediness as well as an increased constraint of pests and diseases, will be tested within the framework of the implementation of the project.
