Food-Dry Seed

  • As part of the Regional Support Program for Food and Nutritional Security (PRESAN), co-financed by the European Union (under the 11th European Development Fund) and implemented in partnership with the Indian Ocean Commission (COI), the "Food-Sec Semence" project targets the revival of a regional sector of seeds and healthy seedlings in the south-west of the Indian Ocean

    This project is led by five research organizations for development, partners in the Regional Platform in Agronomic Research for Development in the Indian Ocean (PRéRAD-OI). These are CIRAD, the National Center for Applied Research in Rural Development (FOFIFA) in Madagascar, the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI) in Mauritius, a division of the Ministry of Agriculture in the Seychelles (formerly the National Biosecurity Agency) and the University of the Comoros

  • The general objective of the program is to contribute to improving the food and nutritional security of the populations of small farmers in the Highlands of Madagascar , the Comoros , the Seychelles and Mauritius .

    The objective of Food-Sec Semence is to improve, in the countries and regions concerned, farmers' access to seeds and healthy seedlings , if possible certified, of varieties of cassava , potato , corn and of legumes , adapted to local agro-ecological conditions and whose nutritional quality is improved.

    For this, the project is working to relaunch a regional sector of healthy seeds and plants for food and nutritional purposes in the four territories/countries targeted by the program .

    The project is divided into five activities:

    • Deepen knowledge of local agro-economic situations and the expectations of producers in terms of seeds.
    • Build a catalog of priority elite varieties in each of the targeted countries.
    • Produce improved starting plant material.
    • Test this material in agroecological cropping systems, in the open field with farmers.
    • Develop national and regional action plans based on a critical synthesis of all actions taken.

  • Expected results

    • Improved access for producers to seeds and healthy seedlings, if possible certified, of varieties adapted to local agro-ecological conditions and whose nutritional quality is improved;
    • Strengthened capacities of actors in the multiplication and production of genetically compliant and disease-free seeds and plants;
    • Dissemination of improved plant material and adequate cultivation practices through trials with relay farmers, showcases and starting point for dissemination on a larger scale in the targeted areas;
    • The promotion and implementation of a seed regulation and certification system under the authority of the different countries.
